I recently stepped outside my usual role to take part in my first volunteering day with Wherry Yacht Charter - a great opportunity to experience something completely different while still drawing on familiar skills.
The day involved Level 1 shore-based training, introducing the fundamentals of crewing and operations aboard a traditional wherry. The structured session combined practical demonstrations with an overview of how these historic vessels are safely managed.
What stood out most was the strong focus on teamwork, consistency and safety. From coordinating tasks on board to understanding potential risks, many of the principles mirrored those I work with day-to-day in health and safety - just in a very different environment.
It was a rewarding and refreshing experience, and I’m looking forward to continuing my training on the water and supporting the charity’s work throughout the season.
